Pneumococcal Vaccine

Protection Against Serious Infections

The pneumococcal vaccine (also called the ‘pneumo jab’ or pneumonia vaccine) helps protect against illnesses caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, including:
Pneumonia
Meningitis
Septicaemia (severe blood infection)

Who Needs the Vaccine?
This vaccine is especially important for those at higher risk of complications:
- All babies (given at 2, 4, and 12-13 months)
- Adults aged 65+ (one dose provides lifelong protection)
- Children and adults with certain long-term conditions (e.g., heart, lung, or kidney disease)

How Often Is It Given?
- Babies: 3 doses (as part of routine childhood vaccinations).
- Adults 65+: Only one dose needed (unlike the annual flu jab).
- High-risk patients: May require a booster every 5 years, depending on their condition.

**Why get vaccinated? Pneumococcal infections can be severe—vaccination is the best prevention.
